Ekwendeni Women Dawa Organization (EWDO) has launched the Maziko a Moyo Poultry Project, a community initiative designed to improve food security, promote sustainable agriculture, and create economic opportunities for women and young people in Thimalala, Mzimba District.

The project begins with the establishment of community gardens, marking the first phase of an integrated farming model that combines crop production and poultry farming. The gardens will provide fresh vegetables for participating households while generating income to help sustain the poultry project in the coming months.

Integrated Sustainable Agriculture

As the project progresses, EWDO will construct a poultry house to introduce the poultry component. Once operational, chicken manure will be used as organic fertilizer to improve crop production, creating a sustainable cycle where each activity supports the other. This integrated approach is expected to strengthen household nutrition, increase agricultural productivity, and improve community resilience.

"Maziko a Moyo is more than a poultry project. It is about creating a strong foundation for sustainable livelihoods by helping communities produce food, generate income, and build a better future together."

— EWDO CEO

Partnerships & Strategic Support

The project reflects EWDO's commitment to developing practical, community-led solutions that address food insecurity while empowering women and young people with knowledge and opportunities to become self-reliant.

EWDO extends its sincere appreciation to Global Youth Mobilization, funded by the European Union, for supporting this initiative. This partnership is enabling youth-led action that responds to local needs and creates lasting impact within communities.

Maziko a Moyo — meaning "Foundation of Life" — reflects our belief that lasting development starts with strong foundations. Through this project, EWDO is working alongside the people of Thimalala to build healthier families, stronger livelihoods, and more resilient communities.
